Foundations Academy

This school was brought to life by a great principle at the beginning. He hired, trained the right teachers for every position, and if things were not working out, they made changes immediately. This is a charter school, with no teachers union for poor performing teachers to hide behind. My children have always tested off the charts. The new administration is decent, but can be a little on the "grouchy side, all the time" as my kid says. The school has lost a little of its spark in the change from two years ago.

My daughter absolutely loves this school. In fact today is a snow day and she is mad that the schools are closed.

The school feels safe, has strong parent involvement, caring teachers and staff, and high expectations for student behavior. The work is sufficiently rigorous, but of course, varies by teacher. I would like to see foreign languages added to the curriculum.

First couple of years was great. This year the teachers seem to be behind, very little communication and confused. ALP is extremely LACKING! Principal is on the ball.

I am so happy we found Foundations Academy. Everyone here is so nice and pleasant. My children have already learned so much. I feel like my kids are safe and very well taken care of.

Good communication from the teachers. Every effort is made to help the kids learn the content and not just focus on grades.

I am a little disappointed in the principal. At our other NHA school the principal knew all the kids and the parents. We have been at Foundations for 4 months now and have never met or talked to the principal and neither has our son who is there every day.

We have (overall) had good experiences with Foundations. I think the fundraisers are a little excessive and most of the staff seems to have little experience. However, overall, our child is very happy.

Love this school. Seems to be a slightly high turnover rate but some staff have been there since opening. Otherwise we love Foundations!

I am overall pleased with the progress that my daughter has made this first semester of school. She had four years of public school and has always been an average student. She is moving beyond average in all but one area and has made the change to the charter program without difficulty. I am disappointed in how the dress code is enforced. One, of several, considerations when choosing Foundations was the dress code but it appears that even after a discussion with the principle this is not a high priority. That is certainly a disappointment.

We have been at Foundations for almost 5 years. We have four children who are all THRIVING at this school. They love their teachers and, as a result, LOVE going to school. While we know it's important to our kids that they have fun, it is important to us that they experience the best education possible and Foundations offers that. All four are exceeding their set goals consistently.

I was very excited and hopeful that my son would have an opportunity for better education here at foundations . I am very disappointed with the principles and all but 1 of my sons home room teachers here. The way the parent teacher conference was set up was odd , because we only got 2 meet with his homeroom teacher. . What about the other classes and teachers , i had concerns and questions. The staff emailed me when trying to contact me about important issues.. i have always gotten a phone call from a teacher for any present matters concerning my child at his past school. Most importantly, my child has been bullied numerous times , as it finally came to my attention that a teacher overheard , my son talking 2 another student, my child had said to other kid, he felt like committing suicide when the bully bullied him. I got an email about this. When finally i got 2 speak with the principal, she never got back 2 me regarding this issue. My son has been slammed at this school and he says he hates this school. There are numerous instances to favoritism here , if ur child has attended here for a long time , the teachers favors them . I got to the point where i told my child , if one of them jerk kids hits or trips him again or says mean stuff about his father passing away and that he must have been traumatized and his whole family needs therapy. .. i told him 2 protect himself and fight back . Of course he is not a trouble maker and doesnt have that fighting bone in his body. He would rather try 2 make a joke out of it to hide his pain. The school does not have a cafeteria. Kids are subjected to wait most of there lunch time waiting in a line , and having only 5 minutes to eat. Only 2 microwaves are available, so more than likely , you're child is eating cold lunch if he has time to eat at all.. i forgot to mention the children have to eat in the gym when they have time to eat. Most days my kid comes home hungry , because he only had 3 to 5 minutes to eat lunch. On the other hand, picking ur student up and dropping ur student off is absolutely ridiculous. I have never seen more uncaring , reckless , impatient , drivers in my life on this school premise as well as there is a very dangerous street you must take to reach the school that is in dire need of stoplights to be put in there. You can see the memorials and wooden crosses put up on both corners by the deceased one that died there by car accident, by the loved ones. I understand the stoplight issue is a city matter on the other hand it is still like a free for all by the parents driving there children to and from this school. I have never been cut off , honked at , and saw more idiotic drivers in my 38 years . I work in public and i talk to many residents here in Brighton , having asked questions to now enrolled students , and parents , and students who have went to foundations but with bad experiences and more odd behavior by teachers and many other complaints, have said there parents took them out of this school . The kids and parents seem much more enthusiastic and positive having changed their school. Life is hard these days with so much going on all around the world . Our children need a safe environment to feel good , so they can get the education and experience they need and yearn for . The only helpfull employee we have met and worked with is La Rey… the office receptionist. I wish i could say there were more . Unfortunately, my child will not get back the time that was wasted here. We do think some of the teaching is far beyond the public school and we will miss this education greatly. But the truth is foundations academy is lacking the force to give the education to the children. Education is there , but with our experience, only 1 teacher had the compassion and enthusiasm to teach. Going to college and getting the education/teaching degree is very common and one of the most easy degrees to earn. Few of the teachers here , have compassion and a love 4 teaching … u can see they like what they are doing. Sadly, 7 out of 10 are simply babysitting . Trying to look as if they are an important part of society and a helping citizens. I would not and will not recommend this school to anyone. When a child is bullied and talks suicide ….. after his father passed away .. dont email me !! ! The bully was also never punished or never had to miss basketball nor recess. There are a couple more things i could go into about the school.. but this is enough .

My husband is military and my eldest son has attended 8 schools. This is by far the best. The curriculum and staff are superb.

It is comforting to know that my children are at a school that does it's best to teach and develop my children. Not only do they have a strong focus on education, but they also incorporate a Moral Focus aspect to their lessons.

Also, they focus on parent involvement (including a strong father presence in the schools, not just mothers). A great school overall which helps my children learn what they need to education wise and helps them become better people as well.

We have 3 children who have attended Foundations since it opened, 2 of which are still enrolled. This school started off so strong and I loved the values they exhibited, but since Mr. Hammonds left the school, it has gone downhill fast. If our kids had another option in Brighton, we would seriously consider pulling the two that are still there, but schools are overcrowded right now. As a patent, I feel like my concerns go unnoticed. It started a 5 but now is barely a 3. Although if we could rate the elementary only I would give it a 4 and the jr high a 2.

Such a great school with high morals and caring teachers! We have been so Blessed with wonderful teachers and staff. My 2nd grader absolutely loves going to school every day. A big change from our daughter, who attended our local public elementary school.
