I purchased one of these as I was planning to go hiking on my own and wanted a reliable way to not get lost, don't worry I also took a map and compass and am confident in using them. The build quality is very good – I also purchased the Garmin protective carry case to prevent it from getting dirty. Setup was straight forward. It was very easy to transfer routes onto the device from Garmin Base Camp. As you would expect the GPS is very reliable – I have used this in a wide range of landscapes and haven't lost signal here in the UK. Battery life is good, longer than I expected, although take spare batteries. Following a route is very simple. Your current track (where you are actually moving) is displayed in pink (can be changed) alongside your downloaded route.
